Bone white dead gleam of a porcelain sink and outside nothing - absolutely nothing through those windows. As in a dream step forward and lay yourself down yes settle upon the slab and wait….
The masseuse begins her work in the cold, empty room.
Something is in the pipes.
Wriggling towards the light.
And then everything happens too fast…
Stop.
Now catch a moon and light the way.
I’ve long been a fan of strange dream imagery. Night of the Hunter by Charles Laughton. The films of David Lynch. Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bete. Bang Bang it’s Reeves & Mortimer. The images come from a series of performances by the talented Beth Greenhalgh, titled Experiment in Terror. While editing the images I found myself piecing together stranger and stranger narratives, getting lost in the sequencing of the images, trying to distil that odd feeling of unease felt through the viewfinder.
For nightmares are a series of certainties. If you step out into the corridor she will get you. The colour of the sky means you all have five years to live. When you hear the sound of the alarm, you must get underground. There is something outside the window…
And if nightmares happen they either manifest in monochrome or colours too vivid and strong to be borne.
Like the aforementioned certainties, once again I see things in black and white.
